While there are many different sites that follow the same basic formula, Kickstarter has always seemed to be the leader of the pack. No middle man of a label needed. Sounds great, right?
Kickstarter is relatively simple to use. There is no middleman in determining whether or not your cause is worthy to be posted. There are no costs for posting it either. The project guidelines on the site help lay out exactly what you need to fill out when posting your cause. Project title, a little blurb about what you’re planning on doing, duration, goal, and of course an introductory video to help present you and your project to potential investors. Kickstarter will help walk you through most of that, and will also help present you with tips and ways to make your campaign successful.
Of course there are certain requirements that you need to fit when it comes to the end of payments. Kickstarter does take a 5 percent cut of all successfully funded projects. Amazon is also involved with Kickstarter and will apply a credit card processing fee of around 3 to 5 percent. In order for you to list on the site, you need to be a US resident, at least 18 years old with a Social Security number, and a US bank account, a US State Issued ID, and have a major US credit or debit card to execute a campaign. These are in place to make sure that you get the money and to make sure that both sides are protected during the duration of the campaign and it’s completion. It’s just a safety precaution.
Now that we have the nitty gritty of how begin on Kickstarter down, we get to the fun part. Marketing. This is the really tricky area. So many people think that they can just put something up on Kickstarter and immediately get funded. Sadly, it doesn’t work so easily. At the very heart of Kickstarter and successful marketing, is the simple premises of having an amazing idea.
I’m going to directly quote what Kickstarter’s advice on this, “Audiences respond to passion, sincerity, and an ability to execute. They want to see you communicate this in your video, and they want you to offer creative rewards that are fairly priced.” The idea you set forth doesn’t have to something earth shattering or life changing, it just has to be something you are completely and genuinely passionate about, and having a great way of both showing that passion and of how you can make your idea come to life. Say it’s an example of you wanting to record an EP or a LP, explaining why is always a good thing to do. But it requires going deeper than just needing new music.
People need to see the potential of it and the bigger things that can come out of it. The main thing is connection. People need to see you and your work, and see whereyou want to go, and how you plan on taking that next step and feel connected to it.
They need to see that their contribution could genuinely help push your career forward. They need to see that “could be great” aspect in your campaign, not just someone asking for money.
Ultimately it kind of is about getting money, but the whole idea should be about more then that, it should be about supporting creativity for the betterment for so many people, the people making it, the people connecting with it, and the betterment it can help give the world. That is what Kickstarter is really about, it is not just about giving people money over the internet, but helping to create connections with people, and helping to give the creativity a place where it can thrive and help create a tribe for those involved.
Now, the trick here for getting people to pay attention to your Kickstarter is getting your followers on social media to help you. You have to start this well before you are even on Kickstarter. Going on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and whatever other social media sites you use and helping to get the word out before hand could really help you out. Using those same sites, you have to tell people what you’re planning on doing and why it important that you do.
Sharing personal stories with people, and sharing why it could be great and important for you do this project really help with the connection aspect. Having contests to help get people to Like, Share, Reblog, and Retweet for your cause are also a great way to help get people to pay attention. Repeating yourself is not something you should shy away from, it does help to reiterate what you’re planning on doing, and why. That why may be the most important way you can get people to pay attention.
Kickstarter is a fantastic way to help push people’s careers forward and to help continue the outpouring of creative work. If it’s used right and for genuine reasons it can help continue to propel art, music and film into the world for our consumption and help keep those creative types working and creating. If you’re choosing to use Kickstarter to help your own career, do your research before hand, know exactly what you’re going to do, and how you’re going to about doing it.
